problem with auto-generated thumbnails

04 Aug, 2016 10:53 PM

My problem is that when I upload a video, Vzaar doesn't seem to use the very first frame for the thumbnail/poster frame. Instead, it will select a frame JUST a fraction of a second later (or so it seems). This has resulted in many of our educational videos displaying messed-up looking thumbnails, wherein the subject of the video is making a strange/humorous facial expression.

For example, here is a video I just tried to fix but I cannot:

This one looks great on my desktop, but when I upload it to Vzaar, it uses a poster frame that shows our teacher with his eyes closed.

Is there any way to get Vzaar to use the ACTUAL first frame of the video for the thumbnails?

This has created many hours of additional work for me to fix the ones that look dumb on our site, and now I'm finding that some (like this one) cannot be fixed at all.

BTW I realize that I can change the poster frame in the settings, but this is a poor solution and is time-consuming and imprecise as well.

    Thanks for contacting us.

As the encoding settings stand, unfortunately we do not allow you to specify a specific frame, only a number in seconds. It looks like, if you have that setting set to zero, the frame can come from any point in the zeroth second.

I'll feed this back to our engineering department and see if there's anything we can do to force the encoder to use the first frame of the video when time is set to 0.

In the meantime, I fixed by opening your source file in VLC saving the first frame as a 'snapshot' and uploading it using "OR, Upload your own image" in the video-specific settings:

I know that's not ideal but it took about 20 seconds and it is, at least, a pragmatic workaround.

It's been a few days with no response. I'll assume no news is good news and go ahead and close this ticket for now. Thanks for contacting us and don't hesitate to get back in touch on this - or on any other issue - in the future.

Be sure to keep an eye on our blog for discussion of future developments:
