CDN Coverage in China

CDN points of presence (or POPs) are what keep your videos speedy. They cache content at the closest available server to the viewer. This ensures that, wherever your viewers are in the world, they have videos delivered from a server near them.

As of November 1st 2015, we’ve added a new POP to our network. However, this one’s pretty special. It’s located in Beijing and is our first on the Chinese mainland. It should help you deliver your videos, in the usual speedy fashion, to a whole new part of the globe.

Why should I care?

Usually, if a viewer’s a long way from a POP, the latency on their connection will increase. Think of latency as simply being how long it takes to ask for a piece of data and receive it back. The further you are from the server, the more intermediary points the request and the response have to go through, in order to get from A to B. No matter how fast your ISP advertises you connection as being, latency can still cause major delays.

Naturally, when you’re delivering video, that’s a big deal. If it takes a second or more to make a request and receive a response, the likelihood is that your viewers aren’t having a great experience. Latency can lead to playback delays, particularly when viewing HD content.

In China the internet is pretty heavily regulated. As a result many companies lack infrastructure on the Chinese mainland. Also, many western websites are blocked outright. By having a CDN POP in Bejing, vzaar can ensure that latency is much lower than other video hosts. We can also guarantee your videos will be playable and not blocked by the Great Firewall.

How do I get access to it?

To get access to the Beijing POP, you’ll need to be on our Premium Feature Set. It comes as standard on the Enterprise plan and can be added to other plans from your account's add-ons page. The cost will vary depending on which plan you’re on. Here’s how it breaks down:

Current Plan Premium Feature Set cost
EXPRESS $150/mo
BUSINESS $100/mo

Once you have the premium feature set, enabling Chinese delivery is very easy. All you need to do is head into your account’s delivery settings and enable “Premium POPs” under the “Delivery Regions” section.

How much can I deliver?

As you can imagine, maintaining infrastructure on the Chinese mainland isn’t cheap, so the Premium Feature Set is limited to 100gb of Chinese playback bandwidth per month. Of course, if you need more than that we’d be happy to facilitate it. Just reach out to our sales team via and they’ll be happy to arrange as much traffic within China as you need.

Are there any technical caveats?

Right now the only technical limitation on Chinese delivery is that it is HTTP/HTTPS delivery only. The POP in Beijing doesn’t support RTMPe delivery.

That’s not to say that videos delivered via RTMPe won’t work with the Beijing POP enabled. They’ll continue to play. However, we won’t be able to deliver them from Beijing and things might be a little slow for your Chinese viewers as a result.

To ensure that your Chinese viewers always receive video from the Beijing POP, we’d recommend setting your account’s delivery settings to “Progressive (HTTP)”. To do that just head here and select the option illustrated in the screenshot. Don’t worry about the player preference below. Either value there will be just fine.
